Italy's National parks

1. Popular National parks in Italy

Stelvio National Park

It is located in the central Alps regions on the borders between Trentino South Tyrol and Lombardy. Vast glaciers and rugged peaks follow each other in this high-altitude national park. The scenery inter-twins history with the 1,500-kilometre paths that lead you to a breathtaking picturesque of nature. There are more than 260 animal species here, including the deer, ibex and the golden eagle.

Pollino National Park

It is the largest national park in Italy. It offers a wealth of stunning scenery that features peaks, villages, ridges and mountains for those who love hiking. The Orsomarso and Pollino ridges dominate a vast area of the park while the plateaus and peaks fade into the meadows and valleys below the mountainous region. The park is tranquil as only a few visitors stream here.

Cinque Terre National Park

It is among the smallest national parks in the country and is densely populated with humans. A day hiking in the area allows you to explore untainted areas of this park, including the sloping hills, colourful villages and the refreshing smell of lemons in the park. If you are planning to stay here for more than a day, you will find accommodation at the Riomaggiore village.

The trail stretches to an altitude of 2,100-2,200 m and crosses various landscapes, ranging from meadows, alpine mountains and woods. This hiking trail stretches 180 km with the highest point having an altitude of 3,000 m. 30 mountain passes border a series of towering peaks and pristine alpine lakes. Your journey starts at Brixen and ends at the ancient city of Feltre, making it the most challenging hiking trail in the country. Selvaggio Blu, Sardinia

It is a 45-kilometre stretch hailed as Italy’s toughest trek in Sardinia. Selvaggio threads along the Golfo di Orosei on the east coast of Sardinia and requires great mountaineering experience when climbing. You will also find charcoal burner’s paths weaving past quiet bays and dramatic overhangs.

Dangerous Animals & Insects

Italy hosts a third of Europe’s animal species and close to a half of the world’s plant species. It is home to 100 species of mammals, 500 bird species and 6,711 plant species. Large animals make up a small percentage as most of the species have become extinct. Some of the plants are dangerous, and you can only view them at a distance. They include:

• Nerium Oleander (the ‘ass killer’)

• Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade)

• Lily of the Valley

• Hemlock

• Aconite (queen of poisons)

Interesting Laws

While it may be  enticing to want to camp among the beautiful scenery, however wild camping is illegal in Italy.  It isn’t very well tolerated, so be careful where you camp.  You can camp if you obtain the permission of the landowner first. This may be difficult for many tourists who won’t be able to speak Italian. Laws, often enacted at regional level tend to forbid camping outside of designated areas and on beaches.
